What is Fire Engineering?

As a graduate structural fire engineer, you will use your skills to design and assess structures that will remain safe and stable during a fire. You will work with structural engineers, architects, building owners, and other professionals to develop structural fire engineering solutions for new and existing steel, concrete and timber buildings as well as for stadia, arenas and industrial facilities.

This is a challenging and rewarding field, but it is also one that is essential to public safety. Every day, structural fire engineers help to protect people and property from the devastating effects of fire.

What sort of projects would I work on?

5 Broadgate, London - At approximately 100,000m2, 5 Broadgate is one of the largest and most robust and resilient single office buildings in London’s financial district. It was also an award-winning trailblazer of sustainability principles, representing the dawn of a new shift towards a consciousness around the importance of considering embodied carbon in commercial buildings.

Battersea Power Station – Repurposing this historic landmark in to a 21st Century destination where people work, rest and play has required us to take a highly creative approach to the brief and developing bespoke designs that deliver added value to our client, and an iconic facility for the city.

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Stadium  - This project saw Tottenham Hotspur Football Club’s stadium at White Hart Lane replaced by a world class UEFA/FIFA compliant arena. Buro Happold provided multidisciplinary services from concept through to completion.

What would I do?

  • Working closely with structural and fire safety engineers on exciting and complex buildings to ensure life safety and optimised structural fire resistance.
  • Become involved with the advanced performance-based design of structures in fire of steel, concrete and timber structures.
  • Undertake fire and heat transfer assessments followed by structural modelling at elevated temperatures of large parts of the structure using SAFIR, Robot Structural Analysis, RFEM and our inhouse SFE tool set.
  • Potentially develop, validate and maintain our in-house advanced structural fire engineering tools written in Python and C#.
  • Communicate and present technical solutions to a variety of clients and stakeholders.
  • Ensure team members are kept informed of important and relevant service/design decisions.
  • Liaise with approval authorities on structural fire engineering solutions.
  • Demonstrate excellent consultancy skills; Good communication and experience in dealing with difficult situations, negotiation and understanding the differing needs of our clients and within stakeholder groups.
  • Visit sites to see how our structural fire engineering solutions are implemented.

What degree would I need? 

  • Masters degree or higher in Structural Engineering or Structural Fire Engineering.
